Jaime Uribarri, MD

Jaime Uribarri, MD is a board certified nephrologist and clinical investigator, and Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.[1] [2][3]. Uribarri is the Director of both the Nephrology Fellows' Ambulatory Clinic, Home Dialysis Program, and the Co-Director of the Home Dialysis Fellowship Program.[4] [5][6]

He is a well-recognized expert in acid-base, fluids, electrolyte disorders, home dialysis, and nutrition in chronic kidney disease and patients with diabetes (particularly in the fields of dietary phosphorus and dietary advanced glycation end products, AGEs). Uribarri has been a prolific throughout his career with numerous publications (see below), and has lectured extensively on various topics at local, national and international meetings.[7]

Early Life and Education

Uribarri was born in Chile and received his and received his medical degree from the Facultad De Medicina, Universidad de Chile (University of Chile). He completed his internal medicine residency at Brooklyn Hospital Center (1974 - 1978) and nephrology fellowship at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Fellowship (1978-1980.[8][9]. He is an American Board of Internal Medicine Diplomate in both Internal Medicine (1977) and Nephrology (1980).[10]

Career

After completing nephrology fellowship, Uribarri joined the Renal Faculty Division in the same institution as an Instructor in Medicine and became an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1982. In 1990, he joined the Nephrology Division at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as an Assistant Professor in Medicine. [11]. He was promoted to Professor of Medicine in 2006. In 1997, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha, a national honor medical society, by medical students. [12] A recording of a 2017 lecture titled "Update on Peritoneal Dialysis" is available here.

Uribarri has served as the principal investigator of several pharmaceutical industry funded and National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical trials. He has been an invited speaker and moderator at numerous local, regional, national and international meetings.[13] [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

Uribarri has authored or co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters, [21][22] which have been cited over 15,500 times.[23] He has edited or co-edited several books on advanced glycation end products (AGEs)[24], dietary phosphorus, and nutrition including:

Uribarri's h-index, which combine's ones publication and citations, is 59.[30] An h-index of 40 is thought to be outstanding, while 60 is "truly exceptional".[31] Uribarri is Editor-in-Chief of the Clinical Section of Nutrients, [32] academic editor of the International Journal of Nephrology[33], Editorial Board member of the National Kidney Foundation journal Journal of Renal Nutrition,[34] and Editorial Board Member of Kidney and Dialysis.[35] Uribarri has mentored several trainees and faculty, and thus has been the final author on many of his numerous publications (see Selected Publications below).

In 2022, Uribarri was included Stanford University's prestigious list of the top 2% most widely cited scientists — "the World’s Top 2% Scientists."[36]
